DESCRIPTION: EPW - Charles Elicott, London, minute repeater cylinder fusee, 47mm, silver OF original pair cases pierced for sound transmission, outer bearing London hallmarks for 1793 and casemaker's "I C" in cameo, bell not removed from inner case to inspect for possibility of hallmarks beneath, white enamel dial, KWKS (key not included with this lot), cylinder escapement, diamond endstone, gilt mvt with pierced and foliate scrolled balance cock with grotesque mask at neck, gilt locking dust-cap, s#17843. An uncommonly early example of a minute repeating watch, though currently in need of overhaul for proper repeat function.
CONDITION: Mvt: Running, inconsistent repeat function, correct number of hour and quarter-hour strikes are typically returned, minute strikes are frequently incomplete and often range between 4 minutes and 9 minutes short of correct quantity, repeat tone ranges from poor to virtually non-existent as bell has three evident fractures, hour strike is dull and soft, quarter-hour strikes consist of a dull soft initial tone and a soft secondary pulse with lightly audible dull tap, and minute strikes are felt as a soft pulse with lightly audible dull tap, mvt appears to have once had a slide under dial at 7 presumably for dumb repeat function but this slide is no longer present, overhaul needed for corrected repeat function, fine-plus cosmetic mvt condition overall, plates with some surface haze and fine scratches; dial with chip above center, small flake below center, some scattered fine scratches and small surfaces nicks, small edge flakes at 9:30; excellent hands, minute with mild bend; outer case shows light wear, an attractive patina, scattered fine scratches, reduced engraving detail, button latch good; inner case shows little wear, scattered fine scratches, some dings to rear, profuse pinpoint surface nicks to rear, good engraving detail; bow pivots freely; domed glass crystal with prominent scratch to its upper portion, some lesser scratches elsewhere.
